Vice-President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has defended his nomination of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his choice of running mate, describing him as a result -oriented person.

He said this yesterday at Kumasi’s Jubilee Park, where NAPO was officially introduced as running mate for the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted NAPO’s exceptional work rate, results orientation and impactful tenure as Minister of Education and now as Minister of Energy.

According to the Vice-President, these qualities were pivotal in the decision to select NAPO as his running mate.

Following the outdooring, party members and supporters praised Dr. Bawumia’s choice, and expressed optimism about the potential of the Bawumia-NAPO ticket.

They indicated that the combination of Dr Bawumia’s economic expertise and NAPO’s youthfulness, administrative prowess and political experience would position them to articulate a compelling vision for Ghana, and secure an unprecedented third term victory for the NPP under the Fourth Republic.

The choice of NAPO as running mate was widely regarded as a “no-brainer”, given his proven track record and strong support base. Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh represents Manhyia South in Parliament, a stronghold where the NPP consistently garners over 80% of the vote.

His royal lineage at the Apagyafie of the Manhyia Palace and familial ties to former President John Agyekum Kufuor add historical and cultural depth to his candidacy.

NPP presents 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament as PC for Fomena

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has unanimously endorsed Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, as its parliamentary candidate for the Fomena constituency in the 2024 elections. This decision was confirmed during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

In a statement delivered by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, during a constituency campaign tour in Fomena, he highlighted the overwhelming support the party had received from Mr. Asiamah, who currently serves as the independent MP for the constituency.

Addressing the leadership of the Fomena constituency, Mr. Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, expressed confidence that the Fomena seat would return to the NPP with Asiamah as its candidate.

He recalled the 2020 elections, during which Asiamah, originally an NPP MP, won the seat as an independent candidate after a fallout with the party. However, his decision to align with the NPP in Parliament, after his victory, ensured the party’s majority control, and helped prevent the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) from gaining an advantage.

Wontumi lauded Asiamah’s loyalty, stating that his dedication and commitment to the NPP should not go unnoticed.

He expressed the party’s gratitude to the 2nd Deputy Speaker for his pivotal role in maintaining the party’s image and influence in Parliament.

“Having Andrew Amoako Asiamah return to his roots in the NPP signals a wind of victory for both the constituency and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections,” Wontumi remarked, adding that this was a moment of great importance for the party.

In response, Mr Asiamah shared his delight at re-joining the NPP, which he referred to as the party closest to his heart.

He expressed his commitment to leading the NPP to a historic victory in the Fomena constituency, ensuring a resounding win for both himself and the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr. Asiamah called on party members to put past disagreements behind them, and work together towards a common goal. He urged constituency leaders, particularly Assembly members, to focus on highlighting the numerous development projects currently ongoing in the constituency as part of their campaign strategy to secure more votes for the NPP.

Mr. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who first entered Parliament in 2016 on the NPP ticket, contested and won the Fomena seat as an independent candidate in 2020, after a dispute with the party. His decision to re-join the NPP as its parliamentary candidate is seen as a major boost for the party’s prospects in the constituency.

The regional campaign tour by Chairman Wontumi also took him to other communities within the Fomena constituency, including Adokwai, Dompoase, and Old Edubiase, where he engaged constituents on the importance of retaining the NPP in power in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Mahama vows to jail galamseyers

The 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to put an end to the menace of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey), and ensure that all persons caught engaging in the act are thrown into jail, if he is elected to return to the seat of government as the next President.

The former president made the promise during a campaign stop at a community durbar in Aboabo No. 4 in the Dormaa Central constituency in the Bono Region.

Reports indicate that while some of the people at the community durbar greeted the promise with applause and cheers, others were skeptical, and referred to the former President’s previous position and utterances on the fight against galamsey.

The promise by the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP to deal with galamseyers comes on the back of increasing demands for a complete ban on all mining activities, given the devastation of the environment by illegal small-scale miners.

Some analysts, however, believe the promise by the former President has exposed him as being an inconsistent person, who only seeks to gain political capital out of issues of concern to the people.

Former President John Dramani Mahama as well as leading members of his party’s communication team are infamously known for encouraging the work of galamseyers, reaping electoral advantage from their position in the 2020 general elections.

Addressing a rally in the Mpohor constituency in the Western Region on October 22, 2020, former President Mahama made a solemn pledge to grant amnesty to all galamseyers imprisoned under the Addo-led administration, if he won the 2020 election.

But, in sharp U-turn, the same Mr Mahama says he is now prepared to jail the very people he had previously promised to grant jail amnesty.
