The spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has pointed out that under the current government, 95 percent of diseases are covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He said this when he delivered the records of the NPP administration in the “Next Chapter” series over the weekend. He emphasised that this coverage had been achieved despite the challenges in the health sector and with the NHIS.
“There are obvious challenges with NHIS, but the achievements are phenomenal. As we speak, thanks to the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, about 95% of diseases have been brought under NHIS. These include kidney disease, childhood cancer (leukaemia, Wilms’ tumour), and sickle cell disease,” he stated.
He mentioned that as recently as last week, Dr Bawumia announced the inclusion of free dialysis treatments for children and the elderly, while the costs for those between 19 and 59 years are being subsidized.
Mr Aboagye stated that the NDC performed abysmally with respect to the National Health Insurance Scheme. According to him, apart from the NDC failing to fulfil its promise to make the payment of health insurance premium a one-time thing, it also brought the number of subscribers down considerably.
“Between 2009 and 2016, the number of subscribers on NHIS decreased from 12.5 million to 11.03 million, and this is the record of the NDC, the same people asking Ghanaians to vote for them,” he stated.
He noted that between 2017 and 2023, the number of subscribers on the NHIS had increased dramatically, in contrast to the sad state the scheme was in under the NDC. “The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has increased the number of subscribers from 11.03 million to 17.5 million between 2017 and 2023,” he said.
He also highlighted the relief brought by over 300 ambulances introduced by the current government, which had significantly improved health delivery services.
“Between 2004 and 2016, there were only 55 semi-functional ambulances in the country, meaning one ambulance served 524,000 people. As we speak, we have 307 ambulances brought into the country by this government, and this means that one ambulance serves 28,000 people. This is a huge improvement in our health delivery system,” Miracles stated.
He reminded Ghanaians of the introduction of medical deliveries using drones by Dr. Bawumia. Zipline, he said, had contributed to the quick and effective delivery of healthcare services in the country.
He urged the electorate to keep faith with the governing party and retain them in power to continue with the good policies and programmes in the health and other sectors of the economy.
