NPP women want woman running mate

Constituency women organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Greater Accra Region have called on the Vice-President and Flagbearer of the party to consider choosing a woman as his running mate for the upcoming elections.

They noted that although, traditionally, the position of Vice-President has been predominantly occupied by men, the party has exceptional women whose expertise and accomplishments position them as highly suitable and qualified beyond measure.

During a press conference yesterday at the NPP Greater Accra Regional Office, Madam Perpetual Asante, the Deputy Regional Women Organiser, said although there are not many women participating in active politics in the country, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, Frema Osei-Opare, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, among other women, have shown they are capable of joining the Bawumia team as Vice-President.

Doing so, she argued, would also encourage other women to participate in governance willingly and selflessly for development.

“We know that, at this point, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the party’s flagbearer, and will ensure that the NPP breaks the 8, come December 7, is yet to announce the individual to support him as running mate. It is obvious that a lot of names have popped up, but as women, we are advocating ours,” she said.

“We know for sure that our mothers, Frema Osei-Opare, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and others are equally capable of taking up that position to lead the party to victory, and bring about economic change,” she added.

Madam Perpetual Asante referred to the various roles these women are playing as Chief of Staff, Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund and Ministers of State.

Like the slogan of Dr. Bawumia, the women believe “it is possible” to break the 8 with women who constitute the majority of the party.

Speaking to the Daily Statesman on the sidelines of the press conference, Madam Perpetual Asante stressed that the women’s wing was not trying to be ‘rebellious’ but making a passionate appeal, especially as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia was yet to be announced.

“The female names mentioned have all the qualities in terms of education, self-esteem, courage and charisma to become the running mate. We are pleading with the National Executive Council, the Party and other movers and shakers of the party to add their voices to our call for a female running. We have the women,” she said.

In the event that a man becomes a running mate of the party, Madam Perpetual advocated, then majority of the Bawumia government  should be women.

“We know that Dr. Bawumia has pledged to run a lean government of about 50 Ministers and and deputies to save costs, so we expect that 30 of them should be women,” she said.

CPP files injunction to halt Ejisu by-election

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has applied for an interlocutory injunction seeking to stop the Electoral Commission from going ahead with the Ejisu by-election on April 30.

The party is hoping to ensure that until a suit filed against the EC is determined, the by-election does not take place on April 30, 2024, or any date as long as one Esther Osei is on the ballot, purporting to contest on the ticket or on behalf of the CPP.

In a suit filed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Emmanuel Gallo, the party claimed that they had written to the EC on April 18 to categorically inform them of their non-participation in the by-election.

According to the CPP, they are focused on the reorganisation of the party and its offices across the country ahead of the 2024 general elections and as such have no interest in the Ejisu by-election.

However, in a recent turn of events, the party stated that one candidate by name Esther Osei was registered by the EC to contest in the election on the ticket of the party after the letter had been sent.

“…The said Esther Osei was introduced by a letter dated 18th April 2024 to the Defendant from the former chair and leader of the CPP Nana Akosua Frimpomaa, who together with 8 other National Executives, at the Party’s National Executive Council meeting on 5th December 2023, were removed from office,” parts of the suit read.

The CPP stated that should any candidate be approved they would go through the regional chairman, Mr Gallo (the plaintiff), and communicate to the national executives. But, nothing of the sort was done. “…per Article 53 (d) of the CPP’s Constitution, it is the duty of the Constituency Branch Party Conference to elect a Parliamentary candidate for the Constituency for the approval of the Central Committee. Thus, the power to get a Parliamentary candidate for the Party lies with the Party’s Constituency members at a Constituency Conference held for that purpose and this has not been done to elect anybody,” the suit read.

The party stated that the Ejisu Constituency Conference has also not held any election to select the said Esther Osei or anybody for the by-election. As such, any introduction made to the EC by the former chair and the dismissed executives has no effect.

The CPP is seeking a declaration that “…CPP’s Central Committee has not considered and approved the said Esther Osei or any other person to contest on the ticket and on behalf of the CPP as a political party, regarding the Defendant’s intended Ejisu Constituency by-election.”

Also, they are seeking “an order directed at the Defendant (EC) not to register and allow the said Esther Osei or any other person not elected by the CPP Ejisu Constituency Branch Conference and approved by the CPP’s Central Committee, to contest the said Ejisu Constituency by-election on the ticket and on behalf of the CPP, a political party governed by rules and regulations.”

The Ejisu by-election is expected on Tuesday, April 30. The death of the NPP Member of Parliament, Dr John Kumah has occasioned the by-election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on April 13 elected private legal practitioner Kwabena Boateng as candidate.

Kwabena Boateng beat eight other candidates after securing 394 votes out of a total of 1033 valid votes cast to win the election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally announced its decision not to participate in the by-election.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, clarified that the party’s focus is squarely on preparing for the main general elections slated for December.

Efforts to provide uninterrupted power supply underway- Afenyo-Markin

The Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has disclosed that efforts are underway to ensure that Ghanaians have an uninterrupted power supply.

Admitting that the current interrupted outages were a major challenge for industries and the citizenry, he said the energy sector was working to ensure that the outages were minimised.

“In any event, we know that for seven years even during COVID-19, a critical moment when businesses came to a standstill when government revenue came almost to zero, the government kept the lights on. So, it’s a real challenge we are going through,” he said during a “Setting the Facts Rights Press Conference” held at Parliament House on Friday, April 19, 2024.

“Seven years of no power outage in the most difficult time in our economy, 2020, 2021, 2022 most difficult time, where the cedi was suffering, we came to a standstill, we kept the light on. So, it should tell you about power efficiency and our competence in ensuring that we address critical challenges of the economy. So, yes, these power outages we are experiencing we are not laid back, we will get head on and solve like we when we assumed office,” he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Effutu, urged the New Patriotic Party  (NPP) Communicators to be firm and resolute in defending the track records of their government.

“Speak to the records and explain in the taxis, trotros, drinking spots, churches, mosque, event centres, funerals, naming ceremonies to the people of Ghana the state of the country when NDC was in office and defend in ensuring that your party gets the opportunity to sustain the implementation of the major policies introduced, especially in the education sector,” he charged.

“So, our dear party communicators, the ball is in your court, this government will depend on you largely to disseminate the right information to the doorstep of the ordinary Ghanaians,” the Majority Leader said.

Bawumia will outshine Mahama in any anti-corruption test – Salam Mustapha declares

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has emphasized the anti-corruption credentials of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mustapha contends that Dr. Bawumia surpasses the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, in any anti-corruption assessment, highlighting his lack of association with corruption allegations as both a technocrat and a politician.

While asserting Dr. Bawumia’s unblemished record, Mustapha contrasts it with what he perceives as a different scenario for the flagbearer of the major opposition party, John Dramani Mahama.

Mustapha, who was interacting with the media in the Ashanti Region as part of his National Youth Campaign tour of the region  challenged anyone who alleged corruption against Dr Bawumia to provide evidence.

The tour aims to engage the NPP Youth Wing in preparation for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise organized by the Electoral Commission.

Additionally, it seeks to rally the youth of the region to support the NPP government in their pursuit of the “break the 8 agenda.”

“No Independent Candidate can win Ejisu by-election”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed confidence in winning the forthcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, notwithstanding the emergence of Independent Candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi as a formidable contender.

NPP members are actively engaging in campaign activities throughout the Constituency to garner support for the impending election.

Both the party’s national and regional executives have intensified their efforts within the constituency and are confident in retaining the Ejisu parliamentary seat.

During an interview on Accra-based Citi News, the National Organizer of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, expressed the party’s unwavering confidence stating, “Clearly Ejisu is NPP and NPP is Ejisu…we do not see that any independent candidate can win the Ejisu Constituency. We have a vibrant and energetic lawyer and we are strategically positioning the party to win this hands down.”

The party further asserted that Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Member of Parliament for the area running as an independent candidate, has offered minimal contribution to the constituency’s development.

Nana Boakye added that the independent candidate poses no threat to the party’s expected victory.

“The facts are there; under President Kufuor, he was appointed at the Ministry of Highways as a director. Under Nana Akufo-Addo he was appointed as a deputy minister of roads…NPP gave him the opportunity to be an MP for 12 good years.”

Mahama has nothing new to offer – Afenyo-Markin

The Majority in Parliament has urged Ghanaians to rebuff the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the December elections, citing the opposition party’s alleged lack of innovative solutions to the nation’s challenges.

They argue that victory for the NDC could potentially trigger a leadership crisis within the party, especially considering that their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, would be limited to a single term if elected.

During a press briefing in Accra on Friday, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, voiced these concerns emphasising that a return to power by Mahama would likely result in a lack of urgency in governance.

He noted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents a more promising future for Ghana.

The Effutu MP suggested that Dr Bawumia’s leadership offers a vision that aligns more closely with the country’s needs.

“We have the NDC candidate who has had the opportunity to serve as vice president and president. He’s been vice president for three and a half years before and he’s been president for some four and half years. We know his track record. He is the same person with the same old team coming to tell us that they have something to offer but we know their track record,” he said.

He further claimed that if Mr Mahama secures victory in the elections, his single-term presidency would likely diminish any sense of urgency in governance, as he would not be vying for re-election.

“He has only one term, there will be no sense of urgency, and we dare say that from day one that government will be in crisis because those party people will be struggling for who should be the next leader. Ghanaians need a stable government with focus…Dr Bawumia offers a better future than John Mahama,” the Majority Leader added.
